Extracapsular Cataract Surgery

Extracapsular Cataract Surgery (ECCE) is an advanced level of Cataract surgery. This surgery in only opted when the patient’s case is more complicated, the patient’s cataract is too hard that the cataract cannot be removed by Phacoemulsification surgery.

In this procedure the anesthesia is given through an injection around the eye and then the incision made is a bit larger so that the faulty lens can be removed in one piece, instead of breaking it into fragments and then removing it with the suction. The process is almost same as the Phacoemulsification surgery where after the removal of the faulty lens, an artificial lens Intraocular Lens Implant (IOL) is replaced.

At the end, an eye patch is given to the patient to wear for a day or two, but the time limit to remove the sutures can take up to six weeks. During which the Optometrist will guide the patient to avoid bending down or lifting heavy weights.
