Dr. Nauman Hashmani is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Surgeon at Hashmanis Group of Hospitals, where he serves as Director and Head of Research. Holding an MBBS from Dow Medical College, FCPS in Ophthalmology, Membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons Glasgow in Ophthalmology (MRCS Glasg), and the ARVO Science Communication Training Fellowship (SciComTF), he is one of the most credentialled clinician-scientists in Pakistani ophthalmology today.
His surgical practice spans three highly specialised domains: corneal and refractive surgery, including LASIK, SMILE Pro, topography-guided PRK, and corneal cross-linking; surgical retina, including vitreoretinal surgery and retinal detachment repair; and advanced cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens implantation. The breadth of this surgical scope, across both the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, is uncommon in a single surgeon and reflects a level of training that goes well beyond standard ophthalmology practice.
In the research domain, Dr. Nauman has published 37 peer-reviewed papers accumulating over 368 academic citations, with work appearing in Clinical Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, the Pakistan Journal of Ophthalmology, and Cureus, among others. His research spans corneal topography, pachymetry and epithelial mapping, refractive surgery outcomes, OCT and OCT-angiography-based diagnostics, intraoperative OCT in vitreoretinal surgery, dry eye disease, and ocular surface science — a portfolio that maps directly onto the diagnostic and surgical capabilities at Hashmanis. He completed a research internship at McGill University and has co-authored work with institutions across North America, Europe, and Asia.
His international standing is further marked by the ARVO SciCommTF — a competitive one-year fellowship from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the world’s foremost eye and vision research body, awarded to select early-career researchers for excellence in science communication and advocacy. The credential reflects not only research ability but a commitment to making ophthalmology science accessible to the public — something Dr. Nauman actively pursues through his own social media platforms, where he regularly delivers educational content on eye health to a broad audience.
Dr. Nauman currently serves as President of the Pakistan Society of Young Ophthalmologists (PSYO), the national body connecting ophthalmology trainees and early-career specialists through mentorship, simulation-based education, and regional and global dialogue around eye care. He leads panel discussions, moderates training programmes, and presents at national and international conferences including KarOphth and ARVO.
As Director of Hashmanis Group of Hospitals and the institution’s Head of Research, Dr. Nauman occupies a unique position — surgeon, scientist, educator, and institutional leader simultaneously — continuing a legacy of clinical and academic excellence that Hashmanis has built across five decades of eye care in Pakistan.
